Composite indicators, honestly built
The world's indicators, composed.
Indicator Gateway is a unified explorer and portfolio engine for the numbers the world runs on: development, macroeconomy, labour, demographics, climate, governance and more. Compose 18,000+ indicators from 22 global sources, World Bank and IMF to V-Dem and UCDP, alongside your own custom series, into direction-aware composite indices, benchmark them against peer countries, and see exactly where every number came from. Alongside it, a trade and tariff data plane carries applied schedules from eighteen customs authorities, bilateral trade flows and the documented actions that change them.
Built on the World Bank, IMF WEO, UN SDG and population databases, ILOSTAT, FAO, Climate Watch, Ember, V-Dem and 22 sources in all, plus eighteen official tariff schedules. History to 1750, projections to 2050, every estimate disclosed.
Composite against blended peer benchmark 2015–2024
How it works
From raw indicator to living index in four steps
Browse
Explore each source's own hierarchy, from World Bank categories to UN goals and series, across 22 global providers and 18,000+ indicators, with historical charts per country and frequency disclosed.
Compose
Pick holdings as indicator × country pairs. Set weights, declare which direction counts as improvement, and choose a normalization method.
Benchmark
Track against computable benchmarks: a peer country, a blended per-holding peer basket, or a custom indicator. Never a text label.
Monitor
Watch the composite live: attribution by holding, country or theme, what-if rebalancing, alerts on releases, crossovers and stale vintages.
The platform
Four instruments, one honest data layer
Everything reads from the same unified analytics store, so an indicator means the same thing in the Explorer, in a portfolio, in a custom formula, and over the API.
Explorer
Find the series that matters
Drill from source to category to series across 22 providers: the World Bank's databases, IMF forecasts, UN agencies, ILOSTAT, FAO, climate and energy sources, democracy and conflict data. Chart any indicator for any country and send it straight into a portfolio.
- Historical charts with units and definitions
- Native frequency shown; sub-annual series annualized by a disclosed rule
- One-click Add to portfolio
Portfolios
Composite indices, not spreadsheets
A portfolio is a weighted, direction-aware composite index over live indicator data, normalized so carbon intensity and school enrollment can share one line.
- Holdings are indicator × country, each with weight and orientation
- Peer, blended and custom benchmarks, always computed
- Attribution that sums exactly; what-if weights recompute live
Indicator Builder
Your own indicators, from formula to platform
Combine any series into a custom indicator: sums, differences, products and ratios. Published indicators behave like first-class data: chartable, holdable, benchmarkable.
- Four operators (add, subtract, multiply, divide) with per-operand weights
- Sub-annual sources annualized by your rule, or kept at native frequency
- Missing-data policy you choose: skip years or carry forward
Data API
Take the numbers with you
A read-only REST API over the same data layer: the catalog, every observation, and your custom indicators computed on demand, exactly as the app charts them.
- Revocable API keys, created in the app and shown once
- Disclosed annualization over the wire, or native frequency on request
- Available on the Pro plan and above
Trade & tariff data
What every country actually charges
A second data plane, built the same way and to the same standard: applied tariff schedules, bilateral trade flows and documented tariff actions, each taken from the customs authority that publishes it.
Tariff schedules
Eighteen authorities, unmerged
From the US HTS and EU TARIC to India's Customs Tariff, Indonesia's BTKI and Saudi Arabia's ZATCA schedule, each parsed from its own gazette or portal at its own legal grain, in its own language.
- Northern Ireland kept separate from Great Britain
- Every edition an immutable, pinnable revision
- A derived HS6 layer compares one product across eighteen jurisdictions
Trade flows
Monthly, bitemporal, honest about gaps
Imports and exports by product and partner from eleven reporting authorities, stored so you can replay what was known on any past date rather than only what is known today.
- Confidential cells stay null and flagged, never zero
- Non-publishing countries reconstructed from partner reports, always labelled
- Revisions arrive as new versions, not silent edits
Policy events
The action, and the document behind it
United States tariff actions as structured events, each tied to the official publication that created it, with effective windows and rate components extracted and labelled by review status.
- Official source document archived and checksummed
- Machine-extracted or analyst-reviewed, never blurred
- Corrections linked to what they correct

Why it's different
Statistics you can put your name under
Composite indices earn trust by showing their work. The platform's design rule: nothing silent, nothing implied.
Honest labels
Progress is stated as index points since a base year, never dressed up as "returns". Lower-is-better series are inverted openly, not quietly.
Provenance visible
Every cell knows whether it was observed, interpolated or carried forward. Stale vintages are flagged in the data-health view, not buried.
Methodology disclosed
Normalization, base years, annualization rules and benchmark definitions are all explicit, user-chosen and shown wherever the number appears.
